Goal

Access to clean and safe water is a fundamental human right, yet the Handeni District in Tanzania has struggled with water scarcity for decades. Communities in the region relied on contaminated water sources or traveled long distances to access water, which significantly impacted their health, productivity, and education.

AidVenture Africa, with the support of donors and partners, initiated a water well drilling project in Tanga Handeni to provide sustainable access to clean water for thousands of residents.

Objectives

  1. Primary Objective:
    • To drill and establish functional wells to provide safe and reliable water for the Handeni community.
  2. Specific Objectives:
      • Reduce waterborne diseases by 70% through access to clean water.
      • Decrease the time spent on water collection, particularly for women and children.
      • Promote hygiene and sanitation through water availability.

Project Activities

      1. Community Needs Assessment:
        • Conducted a baseline survey to identify the most affected areas.
        • Consulted local leaders and community members to understand specific challenges and needs.
      2. Technical Survey and Site Selection:
        • Partnered with hydrogeologists to conduct soil and water table assessments.
        • Selected strategic locations with the highest potential for sustainable water access.
      3. Well Drilling and Construction:
        • Procured drilling equipment and materials.
        • Drilled and installed three deep wells in key locations across the district.
        • Constructed protective structures and installed manual and electric pumps for easy water access.
      4. Community Engagement and Training:
        • Formed water user committees to manage and maintain the wells.
        • Provided training on basic maintenance and sanitation practices.
      5. Monitoring and Evaluation:
        • Conducted post-construction assessments to ensure functionality.
        • Collected feedback from the community to measure impact and identify areas for improvement.

Outcomes and Impact

  1. Improved Access to Clean Water:

    • Over 3,000 residents now have access to safe and reliable water within walking distance.
  2. Health Benefits:

    • Reduced cases of waterborne diseases such as cholera and diarrhea, particularly among children.
  3. Empowerment of Women and Children:

    • Women and children no longer spend hours fetching water, allowing more time for education and income-generating activities.
  4. Strengthened Community Leadership:

    • Established local water user committees equipped with skills to ensure sustainability.

Challenges Encountered

  • Geological Complexity:
    • Some sites required deeper drilling than initially anticipated, increasing costs and time.
  • Logistical Constraints:
    • Transporting equipment to remote areas posed logistical challenges.

Future Recommendations

  1. Expansion of the Project:
    • Drill additional wells in neighboring communities to expand reach.
  2. Regular Maintenance Support:
    • Establish periodic technical check-ups to ensure long-term functionality.
  3. Increased Community Engagement:
    • Continue education programs on hygiene and water conservation.
